End of Night 3
Drake hung up his phone and tucked it away.
“Let me guess, another arrest?”
Drake gave a sullen nod.
“I’m telling you, Sarge. Lizard people,” Stanley loudly popped the gum he had been chewing for an hour now, “Or maybe aliens. I heard they found some alien bodies down in Mexico.”
Drake gritted his teeth and reminded himself he didn’t want to spend his life in jail for shooting his moron of a partner. “Sure, whatever. Aliens.” He hated this conversation almost as he hated this whole mess of a case. Drake watched in silence as the cops showed up, parked the black and white out front, lights still flashing and the two beat cops headed for the door. Just as they stepped on the porch they stopped.
“What are they doing?” Stanley asked.
“I don’t know, turn on the radio, would ya?”
Stanley flipped on the radio and they listened to crackle as the voice of the dispatcher said, “Repeat, arrest warrant revoked, do not advance on the perp.” The two cops retreated from the porch, hopped in their car and left without a backwards glance. This was above their paygrade.
“What the hell was that about?” Drake grumbled as he switched the radio off, “This makes no sense at all. Why would they pull an arrest warrant at the last minute?”
Stanley shrugged and commented with a grin, “I don’t know boss, but the truth is out there.”
“I hate this job,” was the only reply that Drake gave to the poorly timed X-Files reference. “It’s not aliens, you moron.”
