The original Japanese version called "Elnard" actually wasn't.
When they prepared the U.S. release, they deliberately scaled up the difficulty.
They wanted to prevent game rentals from screwing their profits.
If the game is harder, you can't beat it in a few days.
It worked. At least in terms of difficulty.
It might have prevented the game from becoming more popular overseas though.
