Shop
Every player begins the game with 0 Gold, unless otherwise noted in the roles. 100 Gold is earned automatically by voting in lynch and night polls, and additional gold can be won by solving riddles. Night polls may even occasionally give rewards of gold. Gold is purely individual and may not be shared among teammates. Gold cannot be collected while dead, by any means.

You may, at any point during the game, elect to purchase any of the items listed below using your gold by PMing me. Unless you specify otherwise in your PM, the item you purchase will take effect immediately.

Image
Mithril Vest -- 4500 gold -- Protects from NKs for the duration of the game.
Steel Vest -- 2100 gold -- Protects against the first NK attempt against a player.
Leather Vest -- 700 gold -- Protects against an NK attempt for one Night period.

Image
Elven Dagger -- 3000 1800 gold -- 50% chance to kill any player who attempts an NK against you (unlimited uses).
Dwarven Dagger -- 2000 1200 gold -- 66% chance to kill a player who attempts an NK against you (single use).
Dagger -- 1000 600 gold -- 30% chance to kill a player who attempts an NK against you (single use).

Image
Foghorn -- 4500 gold -- Grants +3 vote permanently.
Megaphone -- 1500 gold -- Grants +1 vote permanently.

Image
Fake Ballots -- 1200 gold -- Adds +3 to your vote on a given day.
Small Bribe -- 400 gold -- Adds +1 to your vote on a given day.

Image
Soft Slippers -- 2000 gold -- Let you sneak around behind someone, giving a role check.

Image
Resurrection -- 4000 gold -- (May only be used on self.)
The Mayor of Lake Town will also be accepting bids for his vote each Night. You may elect to submit a bid for his vote, and he may decide to hold his own vote or to sell it for the bidding price. No bids will be submitted after the Night poll closes. Winning bidders will be notified and votes will then be directed by PMing me at any point during the subsequent Day.

Bids for any vote may be accepted; that is, on Night 2 you may bid for his Day 3 vote, his Day 7 vote, or even his permanent loyalty. If he does accept a bid for permanent loyalty, his win condition will change to that of the bidder and he will be informed what side he has joined. He will not receive BTSC, but the player who bought his loyalty may PM him through me once per day to inform him what his vote will be.

Rules
(Read carefully; they're not like every other host's rules.)

1) Respect other players! That way every one can have a good time, and we'll get to do this more often. (Anyone for a LotR-themed sequel?)

These next four are punishable by death, after consideration of any extenuating circumstances:
2) NO ASSHATTERY! This ruins the game for others. No exceptions.
3) No role outing or explicit revealing of your role in-thread.
4) No BTSC without express written consent of the host.
5) No verbatim reproduction of PMs in the thread.

6) Info-dumping (INCLUDING ROLE HINTING) is strongly discouraged and will likely be punished. It can result in a loss of gold, or, in extreme cases, your instant death. If you have any doubts about whether something you might say will get you modkilled, ask me first. In the event that a punishable info-dump occurs as a player is about to die, that player's teammates may lose gold at my and S~V~S' discretion.

7) Fake info dumps/role hints will be treated exactly as if they were real. This is for the protection of the game's integrity, so that if an info dump does happen, no one will know whether it is real or not by seeing how I handled it.

8) Have fun!
9) The dead may not post on-topic and may only post in this color.
10) This will be the host color, because I like it. (I call it "peach".) Please don't use it unless you're me!
11) You have to be sarcastic all the time or else. Seriously though, sarcastic orange is encouraged for sarcasm.
12) RESPECT OTHERS!
13) No targeting of the same player 2 Nights in a row.

Also, S~V~S is the Mod on Duty for this game. She is an awesome player and is just coming off a very impressive win, and she's also one of the most experienced and respected players on the site. She gave input on game balance, and did a great job of it, and she's going to do splendidly as Mod.

If at any point during the game you have an issue with the game itself or another player, please contact me or S~V~S and we will do our best to help resolve your issue quickly. If you have an issue with me during the game, S~V~S is the person to talk to, and I think she'll be able to talk sense into me if I'm acting crazy or unfairly.

Story

Our story actually began weeks ago, under a hobbit-hole in a seldom-heard-of part of Middle-Earth called the Shire. Hobbits keep to themselves, and are happy to enjoy life's simple pleasures: the food they grow (preferably great quantities of it), a cup of tea by a warm fire, a spot of pipe-weed, and a companionable evening at home, discussing perhaps genealogies or the best phase of the moon in which to plant daffodils. They never have any adventures (except Bullroarer Took, but that's an altogether different story). They tend to escape the notice of the Big People, as they refer to most non-hobbits.

It is for precisely that reason that Bilbo, a hobbit of the Shire (and quite a homebody) was chosen by Gandalf the Grey, known to the hobbits primarily as a blower of smoke-rings and maker of fireworks. Unbeknownst to hobbits, he was quite a powerful wizard, and had a hand in most of the major happenings of the day.

When Thorin Oakenshield, the dwarven king without a kingdom, asked for Gandalf's help to retake Erebor, The Lonely Mountain, where his grandfather ruled until it was taken by Smaug the Great and Terrible, Gandalf recommended taking a small band to burgle the Arkenstone, the greatest gem ever mined by dwarves. Thorin and Gandalf planned to use the Arkenstone to reunite the splintered dwarven tribes under Thorin's rule, and to then gather an army to retake Erebor. But first, they needed a thief, and because hobbits are so good at escaping notice, Gandalf chose Bilbo Baggins.

Bilbo, of course, didn't know this, and he got quite a shock when 13 dwarves showed up at his doorstep for breakfast and ate his entire store of food. At first he wanted nothing to do with the venture, protesting that going off so suddenly was quite unlike him. However, Bilbo actually had a bit of Bullroarer Took's blood in him, and so, to the surprise of everyone but Gandalf, he went with the dwarves when they set out the next day.

We join this group partway through their journey to the Lonely Mountain. They have had a number of adventures already, and passed through Rivendell, home of Elrond and the elves. They were ambushed by goblins in the Misty Mountains, but managed to escape, and in the Mountains Bilbo found a peculiar Ring and its peculiarer owner. It was there that he first lived up to his title of Burglar.

The travelers were pursued when they escaped the Misty Mountains, not only by the Goblins of the Misty Mountains, but also by Orcs of Moria, led by Azog the Pale Orc, who slew Thorin's grandfather Thrór and thirsts for more Oakenshield blood. The sun is about to set, and they must seek refuge at the only safe house between the Misty Mountains and Mirkwood Forest, the home of Beorn the Shapeshifter, a friend of Gandalf...who hates dwarves almost as much as he hates orcs.

Evening 0 -- An Unexpected Party

Image

The weary group of dwarves (and one hobbit), with Gandalf at their head, marched tiredly southeast across the plain. They were bedraggled from their adventures in the Misty Mountains, which they could still see off to their right, and from their rescue on eagles' wings from the Orcs. The shadow of Mirkwood loomed to their left, only a few leagues away. The sun was falling into the trees, and the reddish light of late evening caught a silver glow as it passed through the branches of the foreboding forest.

Presently, they came to the house they were making for: a gigantic house, it seemed to both hobbit and dwarves. A hedge nearly twice Gandalf's height surrounded it, and they heard a buzzing as of a hundred lumberjacks hard at work. Gandalf called them into a circle and said, "This is the house of Beorn the Shapeshifter. He is not over-fond of dwarves, but he hates goblins and orcs. I believe he will shelter us for the night. At any rate, we have no choice. The plains are bare, and the orcs and goblins do not tire in the light of the moon. They would be on us before we reach the forest. I will go in first. Follow me, three at a time, and I will make introductions. If Beorn has one weakness, it is a good story."

With that, he strode off through a small gate in the hedge, leaning on his staff. He passed huge yellow flowers, and all around buzzed bees as large as Bilbo's head. He knocked on the door, and was greeted by a great stout shaggy man with an uncomfortably powerful embrace and a warm smile.

"Gandalf, my old friend! Welcome! Rest your feet! The stew is hot and my ale is well-chilled."

As Gandalf sat and took a bowl and a mug, Beorn asked "What brings you to my house, Gandalf? I know you are not one for idle wandering."

Gandalf blew lightly on a steaming spoonful of potato and beetroot soup, and let a string of melted cheese fall back into the bowl before taking a bite. "In truth, my friend, I am once again at work. There is evil stirring in the land such as I have not felt in years. We are beset on all sides, and I believe that we must act swiftly. I am heading East with a pair of companions....Why, in fact, there they are now!"

MovingPictures07 and Lizzy sidled sheepishly in through the door. Beorn quirked an eyebrow and said, "Welcome, friends of Gandalf! Join us at the table!"

Gandalf continued "...as I was saying, we set off from the Shire some weeks ago. A few of our number were caught by trolls, and were about to be eaten...ah, here they come!" And Epi and Eloh walked in, sat down, and dug in to the stew.

Beorn looked perplexed, but motioned for Gandalf to continue. "...Where was I? Eaten by trolls, yes! So I shouted at the trolls first to fry them, then to boil then, and kept the oafs arguing about how to cook my companions until sun came up, and POOF! They turned to stone."

Beorn roared with appreciative laughter.

"We sheltered in a cave while trying to pass over the Misty Mountains, and a dozen of our ponies were stolen..."

"Wait, wait, wait, Gandalf! What need had you of a dozen ponies, when I see but 5 travelers here?"

Gandalf replied "Well, in fact, we were more than five..." In walked Captain Bunny Killer, A Person, and DisgruntledPorcupine, and helped themselves to Beorn-sized mugs of ale. Beorn mumbled something about greedy dwarves, but was engrossed in the tale and bade Gandalf continue.

"Upon leaving the Mountains, we were set upon by not one, but two groups of goblins! I saw a pale orc. I believe that Azog has heard news of our quest and roused a party from Moria to kill Thorin. We escape with the help of a squadron of eagles..."

"Gandalf, please! A dozen is a large company, surely, but a squadron??"

"In truth, Beorn, we numbered more than a dozen...and here is the rest of the company!"

In waltzed FZ., juliets, Hedgeowl, Boogs, and a great number more, and helped themselves to ale, stew, cheese, bread, honey...a sizeable chunk of even Beorn's well-stocked larder. Beorn tried to be outraged, and clouted Gandalf on the back as tears of laughter streamed down his face "My old friend, I knew you were cunning, but this....springing an entire troop of dwarves on me...."

Gandalf, however, uttered not a word. He looked with wide eyes at the group, counting silently, until he confirmed what he already knew to be true...their number had increased since he left!

"Beorn, my friend! When we set out, we were but 15, myself included. I count 29 here. I fear the goblins caught us quicker than I expected. They may be among us even now!"

Beorn surveyed the scene. His beard bristled and his eyes glistened with rage. "These are ill tidings indeed, my friend. Goblins in the House of Beorn, the one safe haven between the Misty Mountains and Mirkwood. But you and your company are weary from the chase. Rest here; I will keep watch. Two dozen orcs would not dare attack me in my own house. I will keep watch for tonight. I doubt not that by morning, the villains will be found, and we will put this danger to rest as well."

Beorn left the room, and the company heard a tearing noise, as of old leather being torn, and then snuffling and a few muffled growls. Gandalf raised his voice to be heard among the din, sounds of horror and consternation, "Sleep now! Beorn is watching, and he is right! We will be safe under his roof, for tonight."

As the rumble of the crowd died down to whispers, shocked expressions remained on the faces of the company. Despite Gandalf reassurances, little sleep was had that night, and all the company tossed and turned fitfully. The goblins' disguises were so clever that the company could not recognize even the hobbit or their brothers, and they lie alert and awake, with daggers by their sides, wondering whom they could trust.

Hey everyone,
I came home from work today and discovered someone broke in to our home, made a lot (and I mean a lot) of mess, took money and jewelry and other stuff. The police just left recently, and I don't think they're going to be very helpful :(
My husband is out of state....and I am so not in the mood for playing.
So if you have someone that can replace me, that would be the best option. If not, you'll have to bare with me til I get this sorted out and I get over the shock.
I'm really sorry

I'm sorry this happened to you :( My uni flat got broken into and trashed a few months back, not really the same thing but I know it feels awful and kind of scary for a while. Glad nobody was hurt though, and hopefully they won't come back because they'll know you've called the police (just because anybody would). I hope nothing of sentimental value was taken/broken and everything else can be replaced quickly!

Do you think it might have been Goblins and Russ is just way too committed to making his game realistic?

In all seriousness, I am very sorry to hear that. I know how upsetting that sort of thing can be. I once had an apartment broken into and while nothing was stolen, it was very unsettling and made me feel unsafe for a while afterwards, so take all the time you need.

That is terrible FZ :( My advice would be to take some time to go do something that makes you happy and just put this experience behind you. Maybe watch a movie, or swig a beer, or play mafia! :)

Day 0/ Day 1 is relatively stress free compared to the rest of the game, so hopefully by the time things kick into high gear you'll be back in mafia mode. I don't think you need to be replaced, I'm sure everyone will be understanding of your circumstances.

Oh my! FZ, I am so sorry to hear that, I hope that things manage to turn around for you and the police can actually be of help.
I am glad at least that you and your family are okay. You are in my thoughts! :hugs:
I know I am being selfish but I do hope you can play eventually, I for one am willing to bare with you and wait it out.
I was looking forward to playing with you!

My heart goes out to you, FZ. I've had my home broken into and quite a lot stolen before and I know how unsettling it is. Take all the time you need and don't worry about the game.

As for the game, yay for hobbits!!! :fiesta:

oh FZ. I'm sorry to hear about that terrible experience. I've also been broken into - not scared in the least by my dog who evidently was only brave when we were there - so I know that angry-scared-frustrated feeling. As for the game, I'm willing to bear with you until you can wrap your head around it. I can't speak for others but I bet everyone is willing to give you some time.

That is horrible, FZ.! As others have said, I think everyone is willing to let you take the time you need to get everything sorted out, and if you want to keep your role and continue playing later on I fully support that. If not, I completely understand and will find a replacement.

And hellz yeah game! Uhm... Monsieur le Host, would it be possible to put the polls up and have them end at around 6 p.m. EST? Some people in Yurp might find that helpful. ;airguitar:

I'm sorry to hear it, FZ! I'll keep y'all in my prayers.

Yay game! And great post, Russ! I loved the Beorn sequence in the book, it's a shame they changed it for the movie (although I did get my sig from that scene).

I voted for the posts and results to be at 5 and soon after solely because there is no way I can stay up until 12:00 a.m. for a poll end. I don't mind the post in the morning part I just can't make it until midnight.

I voted Yes but could have gone either way really. Whichever is easier for the host!

I don't this this would EVER happen, lol. But if anything DOES happen that makes anyone unhappy, I am here, even if you just need to vent. If you have an issue, take it to me, via PM, and not to the thread :noble:

Hooray, it's started!

Voted for the second option. Until I'm off of work for the summer and can go back to my regular horrible sleep schedule late at night, I can't stay up until midnight waiting for polls (and I probably won't sleep waiting til morning :) ) I won't, however, be heartbroken if "Yes" wins.

Yay again!

I voted yes. However, this will mean I might have to vote a few hours early. I put the kids to bed at 9 and sometimes crash right after. If I don't do that, Epi and I use that hour to sing praises that our children are finally quiet (until one of them comes out of the room to ask for a drink of milk :p)

FZ I am so sorry you went through that. We went through it a few years back and it was horrible. One thing that was taken was my computer with all our family photos and videos. All those videos from the little grunts when he was a newborn to his first steps. It was horrible and we felt so violated. To this day I hide my laptop and camera every time we all leave the house.

I'm really sorry to hear that, FZ! :( Take all the time you need to recover and get your head wrapped around what matters most!

So here's the deal with me. I did not bring my laptop with me on this vacation, so the only way I can check in is on my phone. I will post once or twice each day, but not much more because I find playing mafia from my phone very inconvenient sometimes. I will probably be this way until Sunday afternoon/evening, so if you csn bear with me until then, I'd appreciate it.

I also voted yes, but I will support whatever is easiest for our host.

FZ, I am so sorry this happened to you. I, too, have been broken into and my dogs were a bit beaten up. :( thankfully nothing was taken that couldn't be replaced. Take whatever you need.

yay game! I'm okay with Yes because midnight EST is like... 2am PST or something like that, and that works out perfectly with my typical summer sleep schedule.

FZ I know it's been said before but... yeah, take whatever time you need to regen
