Thanks for modding boo

And thanks to everyone who even watched a portion of one lecture video in this game and to those who diligently attempted those quizzes. This theme was kind of meant to be a dumb joke, and I threw it into the queue on a whim. I did not anticipate this silly thing to attract so many friends from the broader Mafia community, and when it did I kind of straightened my tie and decided to take my own game a little more seriously. :goofp:

Re: PSY 2310 - Cognitive Psychology [END]

This game was... bizarre to watch.

All in all though I thought it was well-played by both sides. The mafia were well-positioned if not for very unfortunate luck with sunbae's clutch jailing choice and my own pre-game shrug rule that jailer trumps role blocker. Props to c4 for sticking it out and lasting at least two cycles longer than I anticipated. My ideal hosting experience is to end with a final 3 by whatever means, and he did the game great honor to get it there. Town played a great team game early, stumbled, derped, and eventually found their way.

Re: PSY 2310 - Cognitive Psychology [DAY 6]

1. A Mafia Championship participant has received a mafia role card for their qualifier. Their first post in mafia chat reads as follows:

“Okay, here’s how we’re going to win this game, folks. We’re going to float around in a state of relative normality, and then on exactly the sixteen-hundred tenth post one of you will accidentally make a mafia chat post in the game thread. This post will out another member of our team and clear a town player by extension. At end game we will win by eliminating the town player we cleared by vote.”

Would construal level theory anticipate something like this? Explain.

2. The broad notion of “victim blaming” can be associated with which bias(es) according to attribution theory?

3. If a person’s first and most immediate response to criticism is to be receptive and apologetic, would attribution theory anticipate this to be the most likely scenario? Explain.

4. Why might such high-level research questions of human cognition as those explored by CLT and attribution theory be difficult to assess from the standpoint of science?

Re: PSY 2310 - Cognitive Psychology [DAY 4]

Unit 4

1. Suppose the following pair of choices:

A. You may win $300 with a probability of 40%, otherwise losing $100 with a probability of 60%.
B. You may win $500 with a probability of 25%, otherwise losing $50 with a probability of 75%.

C. You may win $600 with a probability of 40%, otherwise losing $200 with a probability of 60%.
D. You may win $1,000 with a probability of 25%, otherwise losing $100 with a probability of 75%.

Suppose a person is presented with the first set of options and chooses (A). What would expected utility theory predict he or she would choose among the second set of options?

2. Is expected utility theory normative or descriptive?

3. Is prospect theory normative or descriptive?

4. Suppose you are playing in a Mafia game and aligned with the town. A player you have never previously played with or spectated suggests it would be "-EV" to vote for their pet town read otherwise contained within a general/consensus process of elimination pool because, per their claims, "they're really good at making reads". Suppose you believe this player to be aligned with the town. Is it wise to trust this player's grasp of probability and expected value? Please justify.

Re: PSY 2310 - Cognitive Psychology [DAY 3]

Unit 3

Pop quiz

1. Write a rule that, as efficiently as possible, describes the category of objects above the center line but not the category of objects below the center line.

Image

2. Which of the following objects, X or Y, would an observer be more likely to classify to Category A according to prototype theory?

Image

3. Some evidence suggests that humans have the capacity for "one-shot learning"; that is, we seem to be able to effectively obtain new concepts with only a single exposure to a new object or category in the environment and no prior experience. Which of the three primary representation paradigms, rules, prototypes, or examplars, would be the least effective for accounting for this phenomenon?

4. Refer again to the image for question #1. What are two pairs of objects (each pair featuring any one object above and one one below the line) that can have their positions switched to create a new category above the line for which a comprehensive two-dimensional rule can be provided? To clarify, this means the new category can be accounted for in its entirety by only referring to two of the dimensions defining the category while the other dimension(s) are ignored.

THE LECTURE IS MUCH LONGER THAN I INTENDED. YOU DON'T HAVE TO WATCH IT ALL IF YOU DON'T WANT. SKIP AROUND. OR WATCH IT ALL. EEK. I WILL BE SHORTER IN FUTURE LECTURES.

POP QUIZ

1. A person viewing this image describes the M&Ms in terms of their rows. Which Gestalt principle suggests this should be expected?

Image

2. Try to imagine the Gestalt principles for auditory stimuli instead of visual stimuli. Think of the sounds of two separate police sirens as cruisers drive by on the road. You as the observer are able to distinguish these simultaneous sounds as being two distinct sirens instead of as one incomprehensible, disjointed wall of noise. Which Gestalt principle could apply here? They don’t have to be visual in nature necessarily.

3. If David Navon were to present the following stimuli to separate experiment participants (one the top stimulus and the other the bottom) and asked them to report the letter they see at the local level, which would be most likely to respond faster?

Image

4. Per the lecture video, indicate the depth cue(s) that you feel play the most significant roles in your interpretation of depth in each image #s 1-4. For the first image, please indicate at least two. If you provide an answer unaligned with mine, I may ask for a justification.
