Re: Halvøsen Ridge [MAFIA WIN]

So as with just about all of my games, I have a few fun tidbits to share with you:

1) This game was inspired by the real-life mysterious demise of a group of Soviet trekkers in the Ural Mountains back in 1959. Check out the Dyatlov Pass Incident for a real chilling read!

2) I used real locations in Norway in my flavor. Jiehkkevárri is a real mountain in northern Norway, and I used Google Maps to try to find a good place for the fateful ridge, but I have no idea if the physical traits of the mountain match what I put into my story.

3) When researching Norwegian surnames, I found a great site/article with a ton of surnames that happened to be written by someone I went to college with. Freaky!

4) My spellcheck hated me quite a bit this game due to all the Norwegian names.

5) I very nearly gave away the solve! Early on I said that I would make your characters match your preferred pronouns. Well, in the Night 5 post, I mentioned Austad and Egner for the first time, and I listed their full names initially. Anyone canny enough to check the gender of Sissel would have learned it was a female name. I eventually caught my error, as leaving that information in the flavor would have made it apparent that the two remaining town members were comprised of one male and one female, thus clearing Fingersplints after Alison's chop.

6) I wasn't following the game very much at all. The mods, bless their hearts, were working in shifts to keep up with all the thread-spew, but I was too busy to read most of my own game! It's the most detached I've been as a host, but the mountainous setup allowed me more flexibility and freedom in the flavor.

7) Having hosted my first Mountainous game, I have now hosted every type of game on The Syndicate except for a Sit-Down special event game.

Thank you all for making this game possible! I thought I was going to take a break from hosting for the whole year, but the opportunity presented itself and it's been a lot of fun. Thanks to the mods for keeping track of things. Thanks to the players for taking purely vanilla setup and turning it into quite the adventure!

Until next time,
-G

Re: Halvøsen Ridge [MAFIA WIN]

CASE FILE: The Halvøsen Ridge Incident- In Summation

Contemporary Notes: In an attempt to put a coherent timeline in place to describe in full the events of the Halvøsen Ridge Incident, I submit to you to following:

April 9, 5:15 p.m. local time: The party eats its last meal, as documented by autopsy analysis.

April 9, 10:30 p.m. local time: Unknown forces begin to strike the encampment. A slow, partial slab avalanche begins on the ridge as wind and snow pound the mountain. It gradually presses in on Tent 1.

April 9, 11:00 p.m. local time: The slow-moving avalanche, coupled with infrasound-induced panic, causes the occupants of Tent 1 to go into hysterics. With the main entrance to the tent blocked by snow, Reidar Bjornstad slashes open the side of the tent and the others rush the opening, crushing him in the process. Members of Tent 2 wake up to the noise of the panic. One member comes to the assistance of Bjornstad while the others follow their peers down the mountain.

April 9, 11:30 p.m. local time: The group assesses their situation and begins to work on emergency survival techniques, attempting to locate scrub with which to build a fire. Jørgen Huseth would have departed back up the mountain at this time. With things seemingly under control, he had time to investigate what happened at the top of the ridge. Reidar Bjornstad passes from a combination of his injuries and hypothermia.

April 10, 12:00 a.m. local time: Anders Norgaard dies swiftly from hypothermia after experiencing paradoxical undressing. The pace of scrub-finding would have intensified at this point after watching two members of the party die.

April 10, 12:15 a.m. local time: Hans Ulven dies from hypothermia as a result of fleeing Tent 1 woefully underdressed. Around this time it is likely that Astrid Mauseth sustained fractured her leg while searching for viable scrub to burn.

April 10, 12:30 a.m. local time: Jørgen Huseth dies mysteriously on the other side of the ridge. Given that his internal organs suggest some sort of high-pressure event, speculation about meteorological and possibly military atmospheric weapons testing abound in an attempt to explain the manner of his death. Around this same time, it is speculated that Kjell Varland fell to his death while searching for burnable scrub.

April 10, 1:00 a.m. local time: Autopsy results peg this as the most likely time for Gunnar Kleppel to have died after injuring his hands and a foot while trying to make his way back to the tents atop the ridge.

April 10, 2:00 a.m. local time: Autopsy results suggest this as the approximate time of death of Einar Halvøsen.

April 10, 2:30 a.m. local time: Kristian Tufte dies from hypothermia. This likely spurs Didrik Bohler to begin his own ill-fated ascent toward the tents.

April 10, 2:45 a.m. local time: Astrid Mauseth succumbs to her injuries and hypothermia, leaving Austad and Egner the last remaining members at the emergency site.

April 10, 3:00 a.m. local time: Bohler dies during his ascent. The well-layered tandem of Austad and Egner persevere for much longer after this point.

April 10, 5:30 a.m. local time: Sissel Egner passes away due to her smaller stature despite making a good fight against the cold in all her layers.

April 10, 6:30 a.m. local time: Lars Austad is believed to be the last member of the Halvøsen party to perish. It is unknown if he knew he was the final living member at the time.

April 13: Friends of the Halvøsen party grow concerned and alert authorities that they have not heard from the party yet, as they were told they would by this point.

April 15: A search party is forced to pull back due to the first of two additional snow storms striking the mountain.

April 18: Another snow storm complicates search efforts.

April 20: Full rescue and recovery efforts begin on the northern side of Jiehkkevárri.

April 22: The emergency site is located, as well as the bodies found there.

April 23: The bodies of Kleppel, Halvøsen, and Bohler are found.

April 24: Huseth’s body is found on the other side of the ridge.

April 28: The body of Kjell Varland is located in a ravine near the emergency site. All bodies are accounted for and families of the dead are contacted.

Not everyone will agree with my explanation of the unseen forces that drove these poor souls to their deaths, but this is the best explanation using the original reports, autopsies, and subsequent reports and findings available to the public.

May the Halvøsen party all rest in peace.

Re: Halvøsen Ridge [DAY 7]

CASE FILE: The Halvøsen Ridge Incident- The Tragedy Concludes

From the Original Investigation File (translated): The bodies of Egner and Austad were found huddled together. Autopsies confirm they were the last to die, sometime between 05:30 and 06:30 [a.m.] on April 10. Their pairing suggests an attempt to use their remaining body heat to fight off hypothermia.

Contemporary Notes: Lars Austad and Sissel Egner may have survived to see the light of dawn. Depending on how delirious they must have been from sleep deprivation and hypothermia, the light and relative warmth of the sun breaking overtop the ridge could very well have been a very hopeful and inspiring moment to behold. Sadly, the light of dawn would have been a cruel twist for the final two members of the Halvøsen party.

Small but mighty is how many described Sissel Egner. She was, by all definitions, petite. She was also an avid hiker, mountaineer, and skier. Someone of her athletic prowess would do well against the rugged features of Jiehkkevárri, but her small stature and low body fat left her more at risk to hypothermia. Despite being from the second tent, and being layered in the jackets and coats of a few of her peers, no accumulation of artificial insulation was going to shield her from the unrelenting cold.

Egner’s passing left Austad alone on the mountain. Given that their bodies were found positioned with Austad embracing Egner from behind, it’s possible that he may not have known his final companion had already passed. Their bodies may have both moved beyond shivering at that point. As late-stage hypothermia progressed, neither one was likely to be able to communicate with the other as their bodies slowly shut down. Perhaps this is the more hopeful conclusion to this tale, rather than pondering how Austad may have been left to reckon with the fact that he was alone on the mountain surrounded by death and sadness as his own life withered away.

Re: Halvøsen Ridge [NIGHT 6]

CASE FILE: The Halvøsen Ridge Incident- The Final Hours (ctd)

From the Original Investigation File (translated): Didrik Bohler’s body was located less than halfway up the ridge from the emergency encampment. Likely starting his ascent too long after initial exposure to the elements, he was found like Halvøsen- prone and heading uphill.

Contemporary Notes: The human body can only take so much. Didrik Bohler emerged from Tent 2 at the start of the incident with a medium-weight coat on. By the time he began his ascent, he had sacrificed that coat in a futile attempt to extend Astrid Mauseth’s life. By this point, all remaining members of the Halvøsen party had been in the freezing cold for several hours.

Altruistic as it may have been, giving up his coat cost him his life. This is evident from how much shorter his ascent was compared to either Halvøsen or Kleppel. Some have speculated that he may have been able to reach the intact tent and survived the ordeal had he kept his coat to himself for the duration of the night. Given the somewhat loose timeline of events, it’s hard to say with any confidence if he could have survived. Making it back to the tent seems plausible, but recovering from at least mid-stage hypothermia on his own is questionable.

Some speculate that Bohler left to die alone- that he had seen enough death during that night and refused to watch his two remaining companions die before his eyes as well. We may never know the psychology of Didrik Bohler, but heading up the face of Jiehkkevárri at the very least suggests that he had survival in mind, rather than surrender.

Re: Halvøsen Ridge [DAY 6]

CASE FILE: The Halvøsen Ridge Incident- The Final Hours

Contemporary Notes: As late stage hypothermia began to set in, time must have seemed to slow down for the remaining members of the Halvøsen party. Bohler was ascending while Austad and Egner huddled together waiting for deliverance.

Based on Mauseth’s autopsy, her death preceded the dawn by about 60-90 minutes. Perhaps the remaining three were hopeful that the rising sun would bring rejuvenating warmth. Given the amount of sunlight hours in northern Norway in April, they could have anticipated temperatures reaching the mid- to upper-40s (Fahrenheit). That would have certainly been a welcome change given the party was subjected to sub-freezing temperatures through most of their ordeal.

The bad news, however, even upper-40s wouldn't have been enough to reverse their hypothermia swiftly enough for them to regain enough strength to descend the rest of the mountain the next day (not to mention the more than 20 miles of hiking remaining for their planned trek). The party had fled down the western side of the ridge, prolonging their time in shadow as well. Also, at their elevation and location on the mountain, they were still exposed to swirling wind currents, further threatening their ability to survive.

The increasing light would make the horrors of the night all the clearer for Austad and Egner to see, but it may also have allowed Bohler to see a direct path back up to the tents. It was a high-stakes waiting game to be sure, with the odds stacked against them.

Re: Halvøsen Ridge [NIGHT 5]

CASE FILE: The Halvøsen Ridge Incident- Losing Time (ctd)

From the Original Investigation File (translated): Despite attempts to treat and warm Astrid Mauseth, she expired sometime not long after [Kristian] Tufte. It is unclear how long after Didrik Bohler began his ascent that she died. Bohler’s departure left Austad and Egner behind.

Contemporary Notes: Initial reports suggested that Astrid Mauseth sustained a compound fracture to her right leg while fleeing down the mountain. While possible, I find it not very plausible an explanation. Given her status as an experienced hiker and mountaineer, contemporary notes of the tragedy seem to smack of sexism. While shallow even for its day, the poorly formed theory is still better than the theories that Kristian Tufte turned his anger on her after allegedly pushing Varland into a ravine. Such are the ways of conspiracy theories.

Later autopsy work and attempts to form a coherent timeline of the incident and its aftermath suggest that Mauseth made it to the emergency site unharmed. Her injuries, rather, were likely sustained while searching the steeper and less stable area for scrub to burn in the fire that never came to be. A tourniquet was fashioned from Hans Ulven’s bootlace, but even that was insufficient.

Even if she hadn’t died when estimated from hypothermia, she would have likely continued to bleed out. It is unlikely that Austad and Egner would have remained behind if Mauseth had already died before Bohler departed. Why they chose not to ascend themselves after Astrid perished remains a mystery.

Re: Halvøsen Ridge [DAY 5]

CASE FILE: The Halvøsen Ridge Incident- Losing Time (ctd)

From the Original Investigation File (translated): The elements continued to weaken the members of the expedition as they waited for their compatriots to return. Despite the severity of Astrid Mauseth’s injuries, Kristian Tufte’s selfless attempt to warm her caused him to succumb to hypothermia first sometime between 02:00 and 03:00 [a.m.].

Contemporary Notes: While nothing would likely have prevented Mauseth’s wound from turning fatal, Kristian Tufte was concerned about preventing the cold from taking her first. She was found layered in Tufte’s light jacket as well as Didrik Bohler’s coat. She was better-insulated as a result, but at the price of Tufte’s life.

Whether you find it romantic or melodramatic, a popular assertion at the time was the Tufte died holding Mauseth in his arms, begging for her forgiveness for his murder of Varland. The truth is that we don’t know if such a positioning ever happened, as pictures of the recovery show clear signs that Tufte was dragged away from the others, almost certainly after his passing. This would have allowed the remaining members of the party to draw closer to each other and cling to the false hope that their friends would return from up the mountain and that their shared body heat would be enough to sustain them until that time.

Tufte’s death, coupled with Mauseth’s worsening condition, was likely the impetus for Bohler’s decision to brave an ascent of his own.

Re: Halvøsen Ridge [DAY 4]

CASE FILE: The Halvøsen Ridge Incident- Losing Time (ctd)

From the Original Investigation File (translated): The body of Einar Halvøsen was also located up [Mount] Jiehkkevárri from the unsuccessful fire, though not as close to the original campsite as Gunnar Kleppel. Halvøsen’s jacket was also found at the emergency location, which advised rescuers to continue their search of the mountain proper to locate and recover all of the bodies.

Unlike Kleppel, there were no injuries found on Halvøsen beyond exposure damage to his face and neck. His ascent failure suggests that the expedition’s leader succumbed to hypothermia alone.

Contemporary Notes: That Kleppel, Halvøsen, and Bohler were all found at different elevations suggest the slow and agonizing downfall of the entire party. Halvøsen’s corpse was found fifteen meters below Kleppel’s, but also thirty meters to the right. This suggests that, during the time that Halvøsen and his companions waited for Kleppel’s return, the snowstorm made Kleppel’s direct ascent path unmanageable for Halvøsen to recreate.

Despite being an experienced mountaineer, Halvøsen’s body had been racked by allowing others to wear his jacket as an extra layer to prolong their survival while they waited. His selflessness ultimately contributed to his undoing. He was likely already suffering from early-stage hypothermia when he began his ascent and became the mountain’s next victim mid-climb.

Re: Halvøsen Ridge [DAY 4]

CASE FILE: The Halvøsen Ridge Incident- Losing Time

Contemporary Notes: After Gunnar Kleppel left to (as I suspect) retrieve warm clothes and inspect the camp site for safety, more time passed. In this time, evidence suggests that remaining Tent 2 members of the Halvøsen party continued to attempt to build a fire and warm each other up by taking turns with the few heavier jackets that had been brought down the mountain. By this point, the two remaining Tent one members of the party would have been suffering considerably from hypothermia and likely would have been dead or near dead already had they not been taking turns with warmer garments.

Time was not on their side, however. Unaware of Kleppel's crippling injuries on the mountain above them, the remaining members of the party sat waiting in expectation of Kleppel's return.

Re: Halvøsen Ridge [NIGHT 3]

CASE FILE: The Halvøsen Ridge Incident- Additional Trauma (ctd)

From the Original Investigation File (translated): Gunnar Kleppel’s jacket was found on the corpse of another member of the expedition. This caused momentary confusion upon discovery of the deceased. Kleppel’s body was later discovered buried under a thin layer of snow just 15 vertical meters from the original campsite.

His exposure to the melting and refreezing caused considerable external tissue damage that was first believed to be evidence of an attack. His left ankle and several fingers on both hands were broken.

Contemporary Notes: While much attention has been paid to Kleppel’s injuries, his heroic intent must be inferred from the circumstances. First, he made it down to the lower site with the rest of the Halvøsen party. While they attempted to light a fire with meager scrub, Kleppel at some point realized it was prudent for someone to return to the original campsite to search for the missing Jørgen Huseth, check the safety of the campsite, retrieve warmer clothing for everyone down below, or any combination of those three. Before heading back up the mountain, he gave his jacket to the wounded Astrid Mauseth to help keep her warm while in shock from her injuries.

Kleppel’s own injuries are easy to explain. On his way back up to the campsite, he lost his footing. His ankle rolled underneath him, snapping his fibula just above the lateral malleolus. In this instant, he fell face first and reached out to brace himself. Rather than catch himself, his fall caused him to land with most of his body weight on his hands, snapping two fingers on his right hand and three on his left.

His body was found facedown on the mountain, suggesting that he tried to fight through his pain and injuries and will himself up the face of Jiehkkevárri, but to no avail. It is possible that he was close enough to the campsite to see the light of the flashlight that Einar Halvøsen hung from the second tent before following the occupants of Tent 1 down the mountain.

Re: Halvøsen Ridge [DAY 3]

CASE FILE: The Halvøsen Ridge Incident- Additional Trauma (ctd)

From the Original Investigation File (translated): Kjell Varland’s body was recovered from the bottom of a 20-meter ravine. His was the only corpse to show signs of substantial tissue damage. This is postulated to be due to falling into the ravine.

Contemporary Notes: There is a notable gap in the estimated time of death of the first four victims of the Halvøsen party and the rest. This is likely due to a period of collecting everyone together and attempting to build a fire. The location where the majority of the party members were found did not offer much in the way of fire-starting material, but it served as a suitable and flat place to gather.

Around 100 additional meters down the face of Jiehkkevárri is where more suitable scrub and woody vegetation is found, even in early April. Unfortunately, the way down from the party’s emergency encampment is steep and technically challenging. This likely forced them to gather what little scrub they could within 25 vertical meters from where they gathered.

I suspect that Kjell Varland was one of the Tent 1 members of the party attempting to gather some of this scrub for a fire while some from Tent 2 were assessing the situation. As Varland was among the underdressed, it is likely that his coordination began to suffer as he gathered scrub from the edge of the ravine that claimed his life.

Given that Varland and Kristian Tufte were both known to be vying for the affection of Astrid Mauseth at the time of the incident, popular speculation was that Tufte may have used to the opportunity to eliminate his competition by pushing Varland into the ravine. Such conspiracies perpetuate to this day, despite the insistence by both Tufte’s and Varland’s families that such an outcome was unthinkable between two young men who were otherwise good friends.

CASE FILE: The Halvøsen Ridge Incident- Additional Trauma

From the Original Investigation File (translated): While half of the expedition team was located near the attempted fire pit, it took almost two weeks to locate the remaining bodies at other points on [Mount] Jiehkkevárri. Two additional storms crossed the mountain prior to discovery, making footprints difficult to identify. If not for the discovery of a scarf above the campsite, the rescue team might not have found Jørgen Huseth’s body on the opposite face of the ridge.

Autopsy results revealed internal trauma with no external tissue damage save for frostbite due to his exposure to the elements. The extent of the damage to his lungs and internal organs might otherwise have suggested a serious assault, but the absence of tissue and bone damage makes some sort of attack or impact unlikely.

Contemporary Notes: Jørgen Huseth was one of Einar Halvøsen’s friends from conscription and an experienced mountaineer. He was also staying in the second tent and was more protected against the elements than most. It is generally agreed upon that Huseth followed the first tent group as they fled down the face of the mountain about 400 meters (in elevation), but then hiked back up to the camp site and about 100 meters down the opposite side of the ridge. But why?

One of the explanations for the unknown forces that drove the party out into the night is the phenomenon known as wind-induced infrasound. Under the right conditions, wind swirling around Jiehkkevárri is capable of creating a Kármán vortex street, which can result in infrasound frequencies. The human response to infrasound can vary from a very subtle unpleasantness to severe panic attacks.

Given the storm passing that night, it is possible that these infrasounds drove the members of the first tent into hysterics and felt such an urgent need to escape the sounds that Bjornstadt cut open the tent and his companions spilled out over him. But why would the second tent not feel it? Being just a few meters away, the infrasound theory doesn’t fully satisfy because one tent’s occupants were barely dressed, while the other’s had time enough to partially dress for the elements.

Perhaps Huseth was only partly impacted by an infrasound event. Perhaps that is what led him back up to the tents- to investigate the strange sound. What still remains a mystery is the cause of his death. His internal injuries suggest he was subjected to a high-level pressure change. Speculation on this matter remains split between a possible meteorological explanation or something more nefarious.

Re: Halvøsen Ridge [NIGHT 2]

HOUSEKEEPING NOTICE:

I wanted to let you all know with some lead time about my plans for the US holiday weekend and how they will impact the game. If there were no scheduling change, EOD for Day 3 would fall the night of July 4th. As one of those 'Mericans, I will be at a picnic and likely inebriated while watching pretty colors flash in the sky. That's not conducive to taking care of EOD and it sucks to make other 'Mericans deal with the game on a holiday. My apologies to all you non-'Mericans playing.

Making Night 2 last 48 hours also won't work for me, because I will be at another party on the 3rd doing the same 'Merican activities. I definitely can't start a day phase on my phone. Not going to try.

Here is the plan:

-Night 2 will run for 24-ish hours

-Day 3 will begin Saturday, July 2nd around 9:00 p.m. EST

-At the midpoint of Day 3 (around 9:00 p.m. EST on July 3rd), I will lock the game for 24 hours. That's easy enough to do on my phone.

-At 9:00 p.m. EST on July 4th, I will unlock the thread and Day 3 will continue for an additional 24 hours.

I realize that this may not be optimal for everyone, but it is the best that I can do to work around my holiday weekend plans.

-G

Re: Halvøsen Ridge [DAY 2]

CASE FILE: The Halvøsen Ridge Incident- The Tragedy Unfolds (ctd)

From the Original Investigation File (translated): Also found expired from the elements in a state of undress was Hans Ulven. He too was from the first tent along with Bjornstad and Norgaard. He suffered frostbite to the entirety of his left foot due to setting out hurriedly with only one boot on. The laces appear to have been removed though to assist with the injuries of one of his companions.

Contemporary Notes: Unlike Noorgard, Hans Ulven’s body was recovered wearing thermal underwear, no socks, and one boot. Such must have been the panic that drove them from their tent as Bjornstad cut an opening for escape. Some suggest the snowstorm caused a partial avalanche that pressed inward on their tent and blocked the opening. Such speculation is difficult to prove given two other storms on the mountain before the bodies and campsite were located.

Ulven’s fate was likely met slower than Noorgard’s, but not by much. With temperatures dropping below freezing overnight, hypothermia set in quick for the underdressed members of the Halvøsen party. His bootlace was found as a makeshift tourniquet for Astrid Mauseth’s leg.

Halvøsen Ridge [NIGHT 1]

CASE FILE: The Halvøsen Ridge Incident- The Start of the Tragedy

From the Original Investigation File (translated): The first bodies to be discovered down the face of Jiehkkevárri were those surrounding a makeshift fire composed of nearby scrub. The attempted fire is believed to have been unsuccessful.

…….

Among those who died of exposure were Anders Norgaard… in a most peculiar fashion. While others were found in varying manner of dress, Norgaard… bore only undergarments, perplexing the rescue party.

Contemporary Notes: Much was initially made of the two members of the Halvøsen party found almost nude. It led to speculation of demons among the religious, hysteria among most others, and murder among the most conspiracy-minded. The answer, however, may be far simpler.

While initial investigations attempted to find a connection between Norgaard’s state of undress down the mountain with the cause of the panic that led him there, his partial nudity and the unseen force driving him out into the cold of the night are all but certainly mutually exclusive events. It is not uncommon for those suffering from hypothermia to experience paradoxical undressing. This is a phenomenon in which the hypothermic individual begins to feel hot instead of cold. This creates an uncontrollable urge to undress further in an attempt to alleviate the false sensation of heat.

Norgaard’s thermal underwear was found on another member of the party, suggesting that his delirious shedding of clothing allowed one of his companions to layer up for at least momentary aid from the dropping temperatures. As the tallest member of the group, it was easy to identify his garments on a shorter member of the party.

Re: Halvøsen Ridge [DAY 1]

CASE FILE: The Halvøsen Ridge Incident- The Start of the Tragedy

From the Original Investigation File (translated): Upon summiting [Mount] Jiehkkevárri, the Halvøsen expedition conducted a partial descent by way of a southern and southwesterly orientation. A late afternoon snowstorm required the expedition to abandon their plan for a full descent and set up camp atop the ridge that now unofficially bears Halvøsen’s namesake.

According to the timing suggested by autopsy, the deaths came between seven and thirteen hours after their last meal. This meal is estimated at 5:15 p.m. local time. Autopsy results are inconclusive regarding first exposure to the elements due to the extent of ensuing decomposition.

At some time during the night, something caused a panic within one of the two tents. When rescuers locate the expedition’s encampment, it was determined that the collapsed tent had been cut open from the inside. Why this occurred is still subject to much speculation.

…..

Reidar Bjornstad’s body was among the first identified near what is speculated to be an unsuccessful attempt at building a fire. Autopsy results revealed no broken skin, but injuries to his back and ribs. Initial reports suggested he suffered some form of physical assault, leading some to originate the speculation the expedition was attacked by the nomadic Sámi, known to occasionally pass through the region.

Contemporary Notes: The unfortunate events on Jiehkkevárri were equal parts poor decision-making and unavoidable catastrophe. From their vantage point on the mountain, the party should have seen the weather changing from a great distance. Weather is known to change suddenly on mountains of Jiehkkevárri’s size, but it is not clustered so closely with other peaks as to allow for sudden surprises like other ranges do.

With no journal entries written after the incident began, speculation will always run rampant as to what exactly caused the party flee their tents in the middle of the night. It is my estimation that Reidar Bjornstad was the one who cut open the tent. The autopsy report speaks of damage to his spine and ribs- both anterior and posterior.

Whatever caused the team to depart in the manner in which they did, it was severe enough to cause them to depart the seeming safety of the tent without ample clothing, and some without so much as boots. If the panic was strong enough, the other members in Bjornstad’s tent may have knocked him down in their urgency to flee, trampling him under their feet.

Evidence for this is limited, but traces of footprints were seen coming from the other tent to the opening created by Bjornstad. All other remaining footprints suggest following the five who headed straight down the mountain. I am strongly convinced that one member of the other tent (likely with a flashlight in hand) saw Bjornstad injured and went to his assistance, helping him down the mountain.

Bjornstad’s right lung was punctured, while several ribs cracked or broken. His spinal injuries do not suggest a loss of mobility, but at least two vertebrae appear to have cracked under the weight of his companions. As he was underdressed for the evacuation, the combination of his injuries and the cold make him almost certainly the first of the Halvøsen party to die further down the mountain as others tried in vain to light a fire.

Re: Halvøsen Ridge [DAY 1]

CASE FILE: The Halvøsen Ridge Incident- Preceding Events

From the Original Investigation File (translated): On April 6, 1959, a trekking team of 12 individuals departed from the University of Oslo for a short mountaineering, skiing, and hiking expedition in the north of the country. The group was formed and led by Einar Halvøsen, a 24-year-old engineering student and experienced trekker in all three disciplines the expedition would engage in. Most members of the party were also students from the university, as well as two of Halvøsen’s friends from his conscripted service time in the Norwegian Army.

The party bunked that evening in Rognan and departed the next morning for Tromsø, where they acquired their final provisions for the journey. After leaving a vehicle in Nordkjosbotn, they headed north and departed on their journey from Lyngseidet. According to diaries recovered from their final campsite, the trekkers made use of the ever-increasing springtime sun, the party ascended to [Lake] Rypdalsvatnan and spent the night not far from its banks.

On April 8, the party is documented to have skied nearby slopes and returning to their camp along [Lake] Rypdalsvatnan again for the night. On the morning of April 9, the party began their ascent of [Mount] Jiehkkevárri.

Contemporary Notes: Jiehkkevárri is now known to be easiest to traverse in the winter months, though such a feat risks exposure to lower temperatures than what the Halvøsen party faces. Also worth note is that Halvøsen led his team on an atypical ascent route of Jiehkkevárri. While ascending from the north is feasible, most modern expeditions ascend from either the east or west.

Diaries recovered from the final campsite do not suggest that the ascent path Halvøsen selected for the party caused any additional or undue strain to members of the party. It is unclear how much a day of skiing north of Jiehkkevárri may have compromised the stamina and endurance.

The surface of Jiehkkevárri subjects traversers to a myriad of dangers, including ice-covered ravines, as well as serac on glacial descent routes. The mountain can be summited and descended in a days’ time, given optimal weather conditions. In April, glacial and snowpack melting would have likely slowed down the party in a number of places.

Re: Halvøsen Ridge [DAY 0]

CASE FILE: The Halvøsen Ridge Incident

The purpose of this report is to fully examine the re-opened case of the Halvøsen Ridge Incident, in which a hiking, mountaineering, and skiing party disappeared in early April of 1959 during their trek between Lyngseidet and Nordkjosbotn, in Troms county (now part of the Troms og Finnmark administrative district) of Norway.

The incident, though largely unheard of outside of Norway, remains one of the most intriguing Nordic mysteries of the Cold War era. This report will analyze the original and subsequent investigation notes, as well as autopsy reports. It is the hopes of this contemporary report’s author that a more comprehensive and definitive account of this tragedy can compiled, and that the final work may put to rest the endless swirl of rumors about what may or may not have happened over 60 years ago.
