Re: The Shining: Night 6

Well I said I'd explain my logic for wanting to be lynched. Though it's probably fairly obvious now.

I had no way to figure out who my people were, so my votes wouldn't help them.
The night kills were gone, so my protection wouldn't help them (as far as I knew).
The main danger to them was from our randomly lynching them.

So I made sure I was one of the three remaining lunches, dramatically improving the odds that neither of them aw lynched.
I did the math and forgot it since, but it almost doubled my odds of victory to eat a lynch myself, assuming essentially random lynches.

I would have waited and done it later, but I wasn't sure I could convince people to lynch me in one round.

Re: The Shining: Day 3

A parting thought:

While I'm fairly confident that none of you need me alive to win,
I would bet my left butt-check (and risk sitting uncomfortably forever) that there are still people who need people *who are not me* to be dead to win.
If you need somebody specific dead, then you have to be able to point at them and say 'it was him!', because King is gone, and the mob is the only weapon remaining.
The implication: take a look at the ones that were unwilling to let go of suspecting killers in our midst, who are trying to spark suspicion.

Also, the win-conditions appear to be character-based; mine could easily have been guessed from the book if you knew my character, and I suspect the same is true of many of you.
If any of you merely have the 'survive' wincon, that probably implies that others of you have a win from killing those people (cause surviving isn't going to be that hard unless someone's out to get you).
Don't let the votes spread out too much, or those who need someone dead will be able to pick and choose.

Thanks for letting me take this hit everyone; I'll see you at the afterparty ;-)

Re: The Shining: Day 3

MovingPictures07 wrote:Crap. This is tough. Yet again I feel I'm in a similar situation.

Now I realize the win conditions and roles are weird here, but I just can't get past the self-voting. Any baddie can do this in any game, especially in a game where the setup is strange and take advantage of people being rationally cautious, and continually avoid getting lynched due to a balls-to-the-wall approach. I realize there's a theory about insanity, but Nev has been saying for multiple day periods now what he has been regarding his win condition. The truth is that he voted Snow on D1, offering that Snow vote him in return, and then now he's gone off and voted for himself.

I'm contemplating that Snow and Nev could possibly have BTSC and be the Grady twins. Would make sense, wouldn't it? Not sure of that at all though. Given it's difficult to sense anyone else's intentions, and even though there is a possibility Nev might actually benefit from votes, there is always technically a possibility for something like that in a game with secrets. I wasn't sure I bought it with Snow Dog and I'm not sure I buy it now. I know for sure my win condition is NOTHING like that, and I don't see any role other than maybe the hotel that would benefit from something like that. Why would Nev do this perhaps? Well, another possibility is that he sees Snow Dog has survived twice now and seems a bit smug, so maybe he sees that it's an effective strategy. Regardless of the reasoning behind it, it doesn't change the fact that self-voting literally gets the civvie cause no better (even what weirdly constitutes a "civvie" cause in this game is STILL a civvie cause, of sorts), and especially now that it's Day 3, I find it a ridiculous civvie or baddie move regardless.

Add that I don't really have any reads on players due to the unconventional nature so far of this game and I wouldn't feel comfortable voting for Vomps, Bullz, or even Snow right now (though I might consider him second), or anyone else for that matter.

So... I guess I am voting Nevinera. With some hesitation... but I believe it's my best option given what's happened so far this day period and the previous two.

I will be back at some point tomorrow evening, whenever I can grab some internet.
Oh noes! You saw right through my clever stratagem. Me and snow are in cahoots; you should definitely kill him first though.

MovingPictures07 wrote: Linki with Nev: True, I kind of forgot about that time limit. But wouldn't you think if all living players had compatible win conditions, they would all win automatically? Why just sit around and have everyone kill each other off?
If there are six people in, and they all (for example) needed a different three to survive to the end, then their conditions are compatible, but cannot all be satisfied. You'd need to run the game to the end to see who made it.

Not to mention that I suspect there are some very different wincons around - the hotel for example probably does not have a fun and happy victory.

Re: The Shining: Day 1

MovingPictures07 wrote: I do think Snow's self-vote was weird, but I can't make heads or tails of that right now at all. Why the hell would anyone want to even do that is beyond me.
I don't know that it applies here, but one reason someone might want to self-vote is if lynching does not kill them, and they want people to know that. In Thomas, I was constantly surprised that snow wasn't working to get lynched - it's about the only way one can convey information about ones own role without breaking any rules.
Hedgeowl wrote:I am curious why Nev threw himself under the bus in his second post. Why do you want to be lynched?
I don't so much want to be lynched as not really mind that much. And I don't believe I'm allowed to explain why.
Hedgeowl wrote:The Overlook cannot be lynched, so do you mean NK'd?
I meant lynched - 'cannot be lynched' usually means the lynch won't *succeed*, not that we can't elect the hotel to be lynched.
Sometimes it means the runner-up gets lynched instead, but the prophecies of doom made me consider that perhaps lynching the hotel might result in some (secret) consequence. Like an exploding boiler, just as a completely random example.

Hedgeowl wrote: This plan clearly didn't work. Forced Snow to try and tie the vote, which somehow protected him? Why would he vote for himself if he was unlynchable? Just to cast doubt?
I voted for Snow because I had no reason to suspect anyone, and lynching people randomly hurts my chances of victory.
I certainly didn't expect snow to go on and tie things up, I intended for him to come vote for me too.
I certainly didn't 'force' him to do anything.

You seemed to imply that you thought this was a negative power, and I am not sure why that would be. Can you tell me what I am missing?
No, no, not a negative power. I think its existence implies a negative mechanic in the game - 'insanity level' reads to me like a form of accumulating value, not a characterization.
I think that people can, in various ways, get 'insanity points', and that with enough of them we start being forced to do things at night, or join the baddie team (by changing wincon), or something else.
I think that power is intended to be useless at the beginning and get more important later.

There is only one 'bad' role listed. I think there's a mechanic that we haven't been told about, wherein we all go more crazy as the game goes on somehow. Llama did say not to worry if you goals seem impossible, that that would change?

I could envision several mechanics that would work, and it would be a bit in theme with the setting.

From the book (I've seen the movie, but don't remember it clearly), I suspect that the hotel has an ugly win-condition.
(I hope theorizing about wincons we *don't* know is alright, Llama?)

I'm particularly worried about the 'threats' floating around - I suspect that they actually indicate some hidden knowledge about outcomes. There are a couple of characters with 'secrets', and in particular I'm concerned what might happen if we lynch the hotel itself.

(I think the bartender probably has one of those powers that can do various things - most likely with names for each capability based on proper mixed drinks. Cause I don't think Llama could help himself ;-) )
