Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread

@insertnamehere @M plus 7

Thx for playing guys but you've been eliminated.

I'll double check my numbers tomorrow but I believe the final tally for round 2 was:

Timmer 42
Golden 15
JJJ/DH 14
Rico/Dunya 13

Inh 8

Mp7 2

Those points are now wiped away and we 6 move onto round 3.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread

Also, the first of the guilds announced nominations today, the PGA.

“BlacKkKlansman,” “Black Panther,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “The Favourite,” “Green Book,” “A Quiet Place,” “Roma,” “A Star Is Born,” and “Vice” have been nominated for the Producers Guild’s Darryl F. Zanuck Award as the top feature film of 2018.

Holders of those films will each earn a point, if they make it to round 4.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread

Let's go over the win points for the Golden Globes in 2 days:

"- Nomination: 1 point each (films earn 1 point for every nomination in any category, actors earn 1 point for every nomination they specifically earn, but not for ones their film earns)
- Best Film win: 10 points (film selections only; for the Golden Globes, 10 points will be given to the two films that win Drama and Comedy/Musical); if a studio owns a doc, foreign or animated film they only earn 10 points for BP-equivalent wins, not their genre-specific categories (that counts as "All other categories" below)
- Actor win: 5 points to actor selections, 2 points to film selections (lead and supporting, and only 2 points to an actor and film when part of the SAG ensemble win)
- Director win: 5 points (film selections only)
- Screenplay win: 5 points (film selections only)
- All other categories: 2 points (film selections only)"

So DH has received one point for each of A Star Is Born's various nominations. If A Star Is Born wins Best Picture, DH would gain 9 points as it would now be WORTH 10 instead of 1. If A Star Is Born wins Best Director, DH will gain 4 points (a director win is valued at 5, and he's already counted 1 with the nomination).

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread

insertnamehere you have Ballad of Buster Scruggs as one of your films but it went straight to Netflix, so it is eligible to be dropped and replaced by one of those movies I highlighted with available points (or any other film you want that hasn't opened yet)

Ricochet you have TWO films you can drop, Death and Life of John F. Donovan, and Mowgli.

M Plus 7 you have 2 films that haven't opened. I imagine you will hang onto spider-verse, but you could drop Paradox as it never opened.

Iron_Dwarf you have 2 films you can drop, as well.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread

Also... round 3 is the critics choice awards. These nominations will be announced on December 10th. Of course, we don't officially GET to round 3 until the Golden Globes ceremony ends, which is on January 6th. But we will be able to see their nominees, and project points, just like we did with the Globes today.

8 out of 9 players will advance to round 2, and unless iron_dwarf shows up and pulls some last second shenanigans, we know which 8 that will be.

The top SIX in round 2 advance to the critics choice awards. So, people need to look at their rosters and try to figure out WINNERS, as winners add muy muy points to their total, which will determine who moves on.

Looking at the points from nominations, you might think INH is toast, but if he gets just ONE single winner out of his 3 nominees, and ricochet does NOT, INH will move on and Rico won't, etc. That's why I highlighted those hanging points just sitting there waiting to be grabbed.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread

Okay, so a quick point. There are free points available for Round 2.

The following films have received nominations and would instantly add those points to your total if you picked them up, as they have not yet opened

Stan & Ollie - 1 pt
Girl - 1 pt
Dumplin' - 1 pt (but this opens tomorrow so you would have to pick it up by 11:59pm)

Of course, to grab those points, you would have to drop a film, which is only possible if you have a film not yet locked into place.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread

The Film independent Spirit Nominees were announced this morning. These don't tend to match up too strongly with the Oscars, as they only reward films below a certain budget point, so several Oscar contenders like A Star is Born and Vice were ineligible. That said, some interesting signs and concerns can be pulled out of this list... for instance, the voters clearly like Can You Ever Forgive Me? but they failed to nominate Melissa McCarthy, despite it being a category of 6 and Lady Gaga was not eligible...

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread

Spreadsheet is updated. This week saw a few minor Oscar hopefuls enter the fray - The Sisters Brothers opened, as did Life Itself. The best the former could do is a comedy nod at the Globes, while Life Itself is likely DOA.

Everyone should note that Golden has released his claim on Emily Blunt, who is a virtual guaranteed Golden Globe nominee for Lead Actress - Comedy/Musical...

Oh, and Ad Astra is rumoured to be having some special effects issues and there is a feeling that it may get pushed right out of the oscar window and moved to somewhere else in 2019... :suspish:

Speaking of round 2... I'm trying to find it, but didn't we break down previously how many people would advance in each round?

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread

I'm fine with only letting actors get acting points. So my B Coop pick won't be the goldmine I thought it would be lol, but sure actors will only get nods for acting.

Hmm, so the post I made above was a direct cut and paste from the rules I borrowed at the very start, but if I posted that other comment after that and it affected how people drafted then we need to discuss.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread

Public service announcement. Natalie Portman's Vox Lux has been picked up and set for a December 7th release date. Natalie will be a fun contender to watch in the supporting actress category. As of this moment, she is available for pickup. Just sayin'

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread

So for instance, DH has A Star is Born. I'm assuming it will be under comedy/musical because it is so musical, but maybe drama? Let's go with drama.

Let's say A Star is Born get nominations for Best Film (Drama), Director, Lead Actor (Drama), Lead Actress (Drama), Screenplay, Song.

DH will get 6 points for 6 nominations.

Golden, having Lady Gaga, will get 2 points, one for Gaga's actress nom, one for best song (presumably she is listed as a co writer).

I've got Bradley Cooper, so I would get 4 points (one for lead actor, one for director, one for co-writing screenplay I think, one for co-writing song)

SO... if you are looking at your roster, and you know you are moving onto round 2, but you feel like you don't have much Golden Globe firepower, now is the time to think about your films. Swapping out a film for one that gets screenplay, director or score or song nominations could save your ass.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread

As we get closer to crunch time...

Here is how the points work for the subsequent rounds. Round 2 will be the Golden Globes.

Your film and actor picks earn you points in the following ways during awards play:

- Nomination: 1 point each (films earn 1 point for every nomination in any category, actors earn 1 point for every nomination they specifically earn, but not for ones their film earns)
- Director win: 5 points (film selections only)
- Screenplay win: 5 points (film selections only)
- All other categories: 2 points (film selections only)

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread

I saw Beautiful Boy and Carell put everything he had into it, it's a heavy film... but I'm worried that a) hes overshadowed by Chalamet who has more "acting" to do since his character fights addictions, and b) the film may not be a huge hit.

I think hes a likely nominee but the oscar is coopers to lose.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread

Spreadsheet is updated.

Congrats to Golden for crossing $1 billion!

Some thoughts post-TIFF... Golden has probably got 3 of the eventual Best Lead Actress nominees on his roster. DH has the favorite to win Best Picture, and Supporting Actor. Dunya has a potential Best Pic spoiler and a lot of possible nominees...

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread

Spreadsheet is updated! No change in the standings, but I will say that with amanda Seyfried in Mamma Mia 2 and Selena Gomez in Hotel Transylvania 3, iront dwarf is slowly crawling back into a fight for not-last-place... Dunya had better watch out! The next couple of weeks will be slow ones, as no one has any films opening up, and only a handful of actors appearing in any new films...

Also, I'll be in Toronto for TIFF in a few weeks, so if you see any mad changes to my roster in September, that'll be why!

Most reviews are lukewarm at best towards the film but the praise for Close is off the chart. Best comparable would be Julianne Moore in Still Alice... insanely good performance in an otherwise by the numbers film. And Close has never won after a ton of nominations, much like Moore.
