No, ted didn't switch his own primary target with Michelle and result in Wilgy getting Dizzy's role when checking Michelle. Is that how mirrors work?

That was a situation I didn't know how to handle.

It's hard to incorporate target switchers when more than one target was involved and one was the factional kill. I tried to ask ted what exactly he wanted to do but he wasn't on and I wasn't available earlier to get clarification. I assumed he didn't mean for his factional kill to get switched (which would mean no one would die).

I just handled that shit the best way I knew how at the time.

Shadow Corridors - Gambit Demon
Each Night, you will select someone with whom you would like to bargain. You have a variety of permanent abilities to offer. These are:

-Tracking (User determines whom the target targeted, if anybody)
-Blocking (Target’s Night action(s) fail)
-Silencing (Target cannot speak at all the next Day phase)
-Disenfranchising (Target’s vote the next Day is worth zero)
-Insanity (Target may only post in accordance with parameters set by the user)

-Protecting (User will protect target from ordinary attempts on the target’s life at Night)

Rob's mind conjured a casino run by the devil.

The devil invited Rob to the Roulette table where the wheel was turning, a tempting cascade of red and black.

And occasionally green.

It was at this table that Rob met Dodo.

Rob protested that he wasn't old enough to gamble and that she probably wasn't either.

The devil laughed.

"I'll make you a deal," he said. "It just involves a little syn."

And then you can gamble here forever.

Syn was syncere, but still a synner.

Night 8 Ends

It was more fun and games the next night for Rob.

Only this time he was holding nothing and wearing nothing.

He had no arms.

He had no legs.

He was bald.

There were blue marks on his body.

He heard a voice call out something about a side pocket.

Rob wondered where else pockets would be if not on each side.

A thunderous force went through Rob's body and his environment spun, green, ceiling, green, ceiling, green, ceiling.

He hit a wall and spun the other way, smashing into a black object.

Then he was still.

Looks like this katt's pockets really were hollow after such a bad night.

The next night, Rob dreamed he was up to something.

He was in a dark place holding something cold and wearing a heavy vest.

Then the different colored lights came on with a siren and it was go time!

He fired at his targets, invisible rays painting red dots on the surfaces of this imaginary arena.

No matter how often he fired, he could never successfully hit his target.

When the match was over, the main lights came on.

Rob woefully looked for his name on the scoreboard and saw that he had zero points.

A laser tag employee came up to Rob, his hand extended.

Time was up, the employee named "Tim" (according to his name tag) seemed to indicate.

With a rebellious cry, Rob turned the gun on Tim and fired.

Tim melted into a sizzling puddle.

Another worker called for cleanup in Arena 5.

Rob woke.

Tim truly was up to nothing, and now he'll never be up to something.

The night after he dreamed of paprika and bad baseball players, he dreamed of radishes and demons.

Dodo was depressed. Nothing in her world made sense.

She felt like a prisoner incarcerated in a place where the bars and walls were irrational.

In times like these, she sought her mother's Martin. She could play a few chords. The quiet strumming soothed her.

One of the rusty strings broke.

It was like a demon had cursed her life.

The dreams returned that evening.

Rob knew he was in trouble when he was helping his father cook and, tasked with retrieving the paprika, it slipped out of his hands and spilled all over the counter. While his dad reassured him that it wasn't a big deal, that paprika is cheap and common, it still cast a bad omen over not just the meal but the sleep that would soon follow it.

In his dreams, the spilled paprika began to take shape. The image it took was unsettling and horrifying. When the face finally appeared, it was terrifying enough to produce a hypnogogic jerk in Rob, and he awoke, drenched in sweat. It was only ten.

It would be a while before he could sleep again.

Night 4

That night, Rob slept soundly.

Something or someone was protecting him from the evil visions that ruined his rest. That much was intuitive.

He had only the faintest impression of what or who. Upon waking, a repetitive sound echoed in his mind.

Then it was gone. It was time to go on with another day.

Sleep is often the answer when you're burdened by the pieces that never seem to fit.

Night 3

The school set up appointments for online grief counselors following the apparent death of Mr. Mason.

Dodo didn't attend. For her, it was just another unfortunate event in a year that had an abundance of them.

To make matters worse, the scheduled guest philosopher Q@A Dodo had been looking forward to for months was canceled for an unrelated reason.

Dodo has heading toward a boil.

Perhaps an afternoon snack would settle her emotions. She got a knife and found what remained of a loaf of bread. She collected two crumbly pieces and put them on a paper plate.

Then she opened the cabinet to acquire the nutella.

There was no nutella. It was gone.

In its place was a playing card.

Why did they have to cancel the scheduled guest philosopher Q&A? Why??? Some questions science can't explain!

Day 3 Ends

The images the most recent sleep brought to Rob's mind remained with him throughout the day. What did they mean?

There was no time for thinking about them though. He had to get dressed and walk to school so he wouldn't be late. He would be late if he got to school after 8.

It wasn't raining anymore, but there were plenty of puddles to dodge.

On the way to school, he passed by Jack. Jack was a loitering homeless man who liked to talk to the schoolchildren as they passed. Most kids were told not to make eye contact with him.

Rob was not one of those, and he tried to be polite when he could.

The one thing that bothered Rob was not what bothered other kids, or their parents for that matter. It wasn't the shabby, dirty clothing Jack wore, or the way he always smelled of something only adults were allowed to drink. It wasn't even that Jack used to be bartender who got caught enjoying the establishment's refreshments one too many times.

It was that Jack called everybody Homer.

Damn Jack, did you really lose your job over crème de menthe?

Night 2

Being awake meant wearing a mask. Making sure people were far enough away from you that you couldn't hurt them. Sanitizing things and resanitizing things. Listening to the teacher on a screen.

A sneeze meant filthy looks.

A hug was attempted homicide.

After breakfast, Dodo attended her zoom class.

Mr. Mac Mason was there. He smiled his friendly, bearded smile and wished everyone a good morning.

The teacher liked to begin each day with a fun bit of trivia. It was his way of starting things off in an interesting way and engaging his students, but Dodo knew it was how Mr. Mason tried expand the kids' vocabularies.

After giving a brief history of a video game called Tetris, Mr. Mason said that the blocks in the game are called "tetrominoes," that they are like dominoes, but with four blocks instead of two, and with no extra toppings.

Mr. Mason was also fond of dad jokes.

The phone rang in Mr. Mason's house. He still had something called a landline. He excused himself to answer it, announcing that it must be important.

He muted his microphone.

And he never came back.

It was during the same dream that Rob experienced another unusual mammal. This time it was a Marmot.

Atop a rock in the scenic mountains, it glared into the distance. After a moment, it uttered a piercing screech.

This caused a strange multicolored avalanche, in which the rocks became blocks and disappeared the moment they all lined up.

Rob woke up after this, reminded of a game he had seen on his dad's computer.

The storm was over, but it was still dark outside.

Did you know it takes ten blocks across to make a line in Tetris disappear? Marmot got ten votes across. He's going to disappear now.

Night 1

Dodo too was asleep.

Asleep meant safety.

In the protective warmth of REM, nothing could harm her.

And in that protective warmth, she met a cop.

The cop held out a hand and promised to serve and protect.

But Dodo could not take that hand. Harsh reminders of whether or not one should support cops or denounce cops or take some place in between haunted her.

Her family argued about this nightly over the past summer it seemed.

Were cops oppressors?

Or were they victims?

The cop said only one thing to Dodo.

Day 1 Ends

With reluctant obedience, Rob went to his room, his head down. He knew what was waiting for him once he closed his eyes and shut out what light remained.

Outside, the storm had quieted, but only a little. A tree branch clawed at his window.

For a few seconds, the power made a feeble attempt to reanimate. The streetlight in the cul-de-sac flickered. The digital clock flashed 8.5 and then went blank.

Rob glanced curiously at the clock and then remembered it was broken. Some of the display wouldn’t show up, including the entire final digit.

A broken clock is right twice a day, they say.

Not this one. Never this one.

Feeling his way to the bed, Rob grasped a loose sheet and crawled between it and the sheet fitted over the mattress.

Rob never made his bed unless they were expecting company. His father never made him otherwise.

There was one more fit of lightning that postponed sleep. Then only the rain and distant rumblings remained.

When all was silent, including Rob’s mind, the dreams began their work.

At first it was a pleasant reminder of a tan cat Rob and his father had rescued when Rob was much younger.

After a poignant reminder of the cat’s presence in the House, the cat began to change.

The cat’s eyes became glasses, cat eye glasses, and then more ordinary, rectangular glasses. The forehead began to grow. New eyes formed above the glasses, and were always above the glasses. The ears turned gray and somewhat wrapped themselves around the newly stretched head, forming something of a silver diadem.

A humanlike mouth formed.

Suddenly the cat shrieked over and over:

“No Meow MeowConnell!”

Like many things in the U.S. Senate, cat has been voted down.

Day 0

It was a dark and stormy year.

Rob tried to ignore the rain and thunder while he played Banjo-Kazooie on his father’s computer. He understood that a long time ago old people had to use things called “cartridges” to play video games at home. They were clunky and sometimes people had to blow in them to get them to work.

Rob did not understand why this was. Maybe it was like blowing out birthday candles and making a wish, wishing that the game would work.

Now he could try out all of these ancient titles with the help of something called an “Emulator” his dad had installed on the computer while his father was downstairs reading something called “Day Cart.” Rob thought it was weird, a story about a cart that can only be used in the day. He asked his dad about it and his dad laughed and just said “good one,” which made Rob refrain from revealing that he really wanted to know.

Rob was about to celebrate obtaining a certain Jiggy when the power went out.

Only the sound of the storm remained.

In a brief, quiet moment, Rob heard his dad’s footsteps ascending the stairs.

It was bedtime anyway. Rob began to point to the clock in the room in protest, but the digital face stared back at him blankly. There was no support to be found anywhere. It was a school night. His dad had let him play on his computer far longer than he said he would. He had stayed up fifteen minutes past his bedtime the previous night. It was hopeless.

And the dreams would be there, waiting for him.
